What we do

Accounting and tax services in London

Everything a limited company, contractor, freelancer or small business needs, from one dedicated accountant, for one fixed monthly fee. Tax planning is part of the service, not an extra.

Year-end accounts & corporation tax

Statutory accounts prepared and filed at Companies House, corporation tax computed and the CT600 filed with HMRC, with your tax figure explained in plain English well before it is due.

Self assessment tax returns

Personal tax returns for directors, sole traders, landlords and higher earners: dividends, rental income, expenses and reliefs claimed properly and filed on time.

VAT returns & Making Tax Digital

Registration when it suits you, the right scheme (standard, flat rate, cash or annual accounting), quarterly returns filed digitally and VAT reclaimed where it can be.

Bookkeeping

Bank feeds, invoices and receipts kept straight in Xero, so your numbers are always current and the year end is a formality rather than a scramble.

Payroll & director salaries

Monthly payroll, payslips, RTI submissions, auto-enrolment pensions and the most tax-efficient salary and dividend mix for owner-directors.

Company formation

Your limited company registered and set up properly from day one: Companies House, HMRC, VAT and PAYE registrations, a business bank account introduction and Xero ready to go.

Tax planning & advice

Included, not an extra. How much to pay yourself, what you can claim, IR35, whether to incorporate, when to register for VAT and how to plan for the bill before it arrives.

Xero cloud accounting

Set up, training and a full walk-through, so you can raise an invoice, snap an expense and check your cash position from your phone. Free demonstration for new clients.

What clients say

In our clients’ words

★★★★★

“A & Co Accountants are fantastic, I have been with them for a few years now and would not consider going anywhere else. Whenever I contact them, I get instant helpful attention, not a message saying they will get back to me, and over the years they have gone above and beyond. The systems they use are simple and easy to follow.”

Janice R. · from our website
★★★★★

“Great service for contractors. When I started back into the freelance market in 2020, I wanted a local contracting service for my company. Read a few reviews and opted for A & Co Accountants. What a good choice! Provided everything I needed to help me set up my company, with quick, professional advice when needed.”

Steve W. · from our website
★★★★★

“Excellent service. I moved to A & Co Accountants from one of the big companies where I was just a number. A & Co provide me with a far better service for two thirds of the price.”

FAQs

Questions we are asked every week

Straight answers to the questions every contractor, freelancer and small business owner asks. If yours is not here, ask us; advice is included in your fee.

How much do I pay myself from my limited company?

Most owner-directors take a small salary up to the National Insurance threshold and the rest as dividends, because that combination usually gives the lowest overall tax. The exact split depends on your other income, your profits and your pension plans, which is why we review it with you every year rather than using one figure for everyone.

What expenses can I claim through my company?

Anything wholly and exclusively for the business: travel to temporary workplaces, equipment, software, phone and internet, professional fees, insurance, training related to your work, use of home and pension contributions, among others. We give every new client a plain-English expenses guide and check your claims before each year end.

Do you charge every time I call or email with a question?

No. Advice and questions are included in your monthly fee. We would rather you asked before doing something than paid to fix it afterwards.

What is IR35 and does it affect me?

IR35 decides whether a contract through your limited company should be taxed like employment. Medium and large clients make the determination; for small clients you do. We review your contracts and working practices, explain the position in writing and plan the tax either way.

Should I be on the flat rate VAT scheme?

It depends on your costs and your trade. The flat rate scheme is simpler and can save money for service businesses with few expenses, but the limited-cost trader rate of 16.5% removes most of the benefit for many contractors. We run the numbers on your actual figures before recommending a scheme.

When is corporation tax payable?

Nine months and one day after your company year end, with the return due twelve months after. We tell you the figure as soon as your accounts are drafted, usually months before it is due, so you can plan for it.

How soon after my year end will I get my accounts and tax figure?

Once we have your records, usually within four to six weeks, and well inside the statutory deadlines. With Xero kept up to date through the year, the year end is quick because the work has already been done.

Can you switch me from my current accountant?

Yes, and it is simpler than most people think. You tell your current accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we register as your agent with HMRC. Most switches take two to three weeks and cost nothing extra.

What if I stop using my company after a few months?

We will talk it through first, because a dormant company is cheap to keep if you might trade again. If not, we handle the final accounts, the HMRC returns and the strike-off so nothing is left open in your name.

Do you only work with businesses in London?

No. We are based at Wenlock Road in Islington and many clients are in North and East London and the City, but everything runs through Xero and video calls, so we look after clients across the UK just as closely.
